Bluestack Challenge 2017

Arriving in Ardara to a warm welcome from the hard working team who make the Bluestack Challenge happen. Seeing many familiar faces, many of whom we met on previous Bluestack Challenges. Sun shining upon the crowd as we set off along the banks of the Owenea River. Leaving the everyday world behind as this journey began. Listening to the sound of the birdsong. Looking at the tall elegant ferns bowing as we walked by. The river seemingly following our every move. Freshly cut grass filling up our senses. Nature at her best.

The smell of a cooked breakfast answering the rumble of the tummy. The taste of the bacon and sausage baps. The sweet, sweet tea. The relief of the relief in the loo.
Onwards to the mountain and climbing steadily. Stopping for water and taking a glimpse at the panoramic views of Maghera and beyond. The wind blowing softly. Chit-chat with fellow walkers and sometimes silence as we retreated to our own thoughts.

Reaching the summit. Donegal flag flying. Sense of solidarity as everyone helped each other. Sliding, slipping down towards the destination. On the ‘home stretch’. Pace quickening and conversation flowing as we crossed the finish line.

A sense of achievement. New friendships formed. Huge respect for and big thanks to the organisers, sponsor Blas Gateway Lodge and supporters on the day. Tasty dinner in the Bluestack Centre. Creamy pint of Guinness in O’Neill’s Pub. Then Home Sweet Home!
